Defense reigns at OSU

When analyzing a Jim Tressel-coached football team, one should never underestimate the defense or special teams.

After a successful 2009 season, the Ohio State Buckeyes look to improve on the defensive side of the ball. Entering last year, the Buckeyes were forced to replace leaders like Malcolm Jenkins and James Laurinaitis.

As the dominant programs in the country do, Ohio State simply reloads.

DEFENSE

The Buckeyes finished fifth in the nation in points and yards allowed per game, and shut out three of their 12 opponents.

Beginning with the defensive line, the Buckeyes will have to replace captain Doug Worthington and Thaddeus Gibson. Fortunately for Ohio State, Gibson was the only defender to declare early for the NFL Draft.

Returning on the front line are Cameron Hayward, Nathan Williams, Rob Rose, John Simon and Dexter Larimore.

Heading into 2009, the Buckeyes biggest defensive question mark involved their linebackers. Ohio State was desperate for someone to step into the playmaking role that Laurinaitis and A.J. Hawk had previously filled.

Brian Rolle did just that.

Rolle impressed with his speed and pass-coverage skills and now will be looked upon as the leader of the defense. Ross Homan returns on the strong side for his third year as a starter.

The weak side should an open competition between Jermale Hines, Andrew Sweat, Storm Klein and Dorian Bell. Hines has the advantage because of his performance and playing time over the past two seasons.

Cornerbacks Chimdi Chekwa and Devon Torrence have their starting gigs on lock after solid junior seasons. Whether the Buckeyes fill the hole left by senior captain Kurt Coleman is another obstacle.

Coleman, a Northmont grad, was the emotional leader on one of the best defenses in the country. Thankfully, safety Anderson Russell graduated and I expect Orhian Johnson to play well. It shouldn’t be difficult to upstage Russell.

And don’t be surprised if Hines takes over Coleman’s position.

Kicker Devin Barclay, the hero in Ohio State’s thrilling win over Iowa, returns and Ben Buchanan should step into the punter role.

All in all, I expect to see another great unit near the top of the college football world.
