Many of us grew up watching and enjoying the old classic Disney movies. In recent years we have seen a surplus of classic cartoon movies being adapted to live action. Films such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and more have been re-made. In recent years the trend of re-making these classic movies has taken flight with no end in sight. But why?
Are these changes being made to keep the movies relevant with today’s society and expectations?Another possibility is that the classic Disney we love is losing its magic, that the writers have reached a point where they lack the creativity to translate fresh ideas into films? I think the standards of the company have been changing as the original creatives passed the torch to the next generation. What the company started off as has since evolved into a massive multi billion company.
Many of us who watched Disney movies as kids can remember the magic, we felt anytime their logo flashed on screen. That’s because those old movies had a classic feeling to them and bring many of us a sense of nostalgia when we watch them now.
Many people find these new adaptations interesting and fun. But while I love to see the classics reimagined and the creators having fun with their work, I do wish we were seeing more new stories being introduced. My own personal theory is that the creative minds at Disney have seen how successful their classics have been at the box office and therefore see less risk repackaging an older story than they would creating something from scratch. This is of course just a theory I have from watching the company over the past several years, as a lifetime fan I will continue to be on the lookout for more content from them and I am intrigued as to what the future holds.
