Learn how to destress with free “Yoga on the Plaza”

On Sept. 26, Sinclair’s Physical Activities Center (PAC) will host “Yoga on the Plaza,” a free and open event for students and staff to enjoy a few moments of yoga and everything it has to offer.

No prior knowledge of yoga is needed to attend. Yamika Leeper, a physical education (PED) instructor at Sinclair who also works with the PAC, will lead the event. She states that all that is needed is an “openness to participate” and a willingness to “be in the moment.”

In terms of what attendees can expect from the event, Leeper named “mindful movement” and focused breathing techniques as key tenets. Yoga on the Plaza is a chance for people to destress and take a break from whatever may be going on in their lives.

Leeper seems to apply the same ideas to her classes. She encourages her students – especially those in the non-credit classes – to “not think of it as a class.” She added that her job “doesn’t feel like work” because she enjoys what she does so much.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sinclair offered PED classes for credit, which included assessments on yoga poses, proper breathing, and muscle groups. Leeper explained that, across all of these classes, she has had a “wide demographic” of students. They vary in age, experience, and major.

In addition to these non-credit physical education classes, the PAC offers a wide variety of spaces, including a field house and weight room. Leeper wishes that more people were aware that these spaces exist.

During the hours that the PAC is open (which vary during the semester), individuals can choose to run, play tennis, or whatever else may call to them!

Unfortunately, the pool has not been available for the past few semesters, according to the PAC website. Anyone who is interested in taking advantage of the PAC’s services should check their website to stay updated on what is available.
