The Latest of What’s Happening in Ukraine

What many have been dreading has come true: on the morning of Feb. 24, Russia began its invasion into Ukraine. Many have died, and more have been injured, due to the missile and rocket attacks on several Ukrainian cities, including Kharkiv. While Ukraine is holding on tightly to its capital, Kyiv, it continues to be at risk as Russian forces move closer.

On Feb. 25, Russia overtook the Chernobyl power plant and held dozens of people hostage. Though there has reportedly been no damage, this event has raised concerns about Ukraine’s other nuclear sites.

Countries have made their decisions on the sanctions that will be placed on Russia in response to the invasion. These include banning exports and access to military equipment. The ruble, Russia’s currency, has seen a dramatic decrease in value as a result. Vladimir Putin ordered Russian “deterrence forces” to ready themselves.

Russians who oppose the actions of their country are taking to the streets to protest, moving others to do so. This is despite the threat of arrest or serious harm. Even sports stars such as Andrey Rublev have shown their support for peace.

Though some have managed to get out, there are still many people seeking safety in countries such as Poland. Among these people are Africans who are being denied entry to Poland. Not only that, but they are facing violence from police and citizens alike. Food is becoming scarce, with long lines for even the smallest of portions. Train stations are being used as bomb shelters for those who are still in the country.

Ukrainian and Russian officials met on the border with Belarus. A ceasefire was discussed but has not yet occurred. Both Russia and Ukraine have agreed to continue speaking about this matter. There is a question of whether Belarus will join the war. Additionally, the United Nations General Assembly held an emergency meeting, which is a rare occurrence.

President Zelenskyy also completed the application for Ukraine to join the European Union. The EU stated they will provide weapons and other aid to Ukraine, though it is not known when or if the application will be accepted and entry permitted.

This situation continues to develop. National news sources such as CNN and NPR are providing live updates. This map is helpful in understanding where the fighting is located.
