The week of Nov. 15 was Sinclair’s International Education Week for 2021. In honor of this occasion, the college hosted several activities in celebration of students and faculty from all around the world. Alongside the events, people can also check out the International Education Week film festival, which includes many foreign films such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Amelie, Afterimage, and even some American films about other cultures like Hotel Rwanda.
Kicking off the multi-day festivities, the International/Immigrant Student Recognition event was held on Monday, Nov. 15, and featured several speakers commemorating students from all across the globe. That Monday also saw the unveiling of the Student Country Displays, which are a series of posters held in Building 10 from various nations including Spain, Iran, and South Africa. Finally, Monday saw the first of several presentations about a multitude of countries, with the first being the Dominican Republic followed by Egypt later that day.
Tuesday, Nov. 16 started off with several more presentations, these ones being for Brazil, India, and Colombia before concluding with International Poetry, a virtual event held over Zoom in which Professor Amanda Hayden read a selection of poems inspired by her own personal travels. The floor was then opened up for participants to read their own poems after.
On Wednesday, Nov. 17 there was a lecture from Sinclair’s very own sister school, North Highland College, from all the way in Scotland. The event, led by their Curriculum Leader of Health and Social Services Sarah Wilkinson, aimed to teach Sinclair students about their college along with some of the customs and traditions of the Scottish people. In conjunction with that extended demonstration in one country, Wednesday also saw presentations on the West African countries of Ghana and the Ivory Coast.
Later in the afternoon on Wednesday Sinclair held The Shadow Pandemic: Violence and Women All Around the World event, which ran from 12:30 p.m to 1:30 p.m. This presentation looked at the rise of violence against women and domestic violence since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic all around the world. The speaker of this event was Dr. Katherine Rowell, who also taught about ways to help and spread awareness of these issues to inspire some positive change.
