National Hispanic Heritage Month is a yearly celebration event from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. According to the US Census, the holiday honors the culture of Latin America and the history of how all of the factors came into play when creating the Latin culture when the Hispanic and Latin ancestors settled into the nations.
The holiday was created back in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson. President Ronald Reagan and his administration contributed to make it the full 30 days that it is today. Sept. 15 was decided to be designated as the first day of the holiday because it was the anniversary of the independence of numerous Central and South American countries.
There are other days, such as Sept, 16 for Chile, which was when other countries in the same region had independence.
Sinclair Community College hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month event on Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. through Zoom, to discuss the meaning and importance of the month. Some of the activities that were accessible were music, breakout rooms, and a quiz.
