The Return of the Met Gala

America’s biggest day in the fashion world is right around the corner, after being cancelled last year due to COVID-19.

The Met Gala is often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” it is a fundraising benefit for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City which first started back in 1948.

The biggest names in Hollywood will be attending with both some familiar and new faces. Some people who have attended in past years are Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, and Kim Kardashian. The Met Gala’s new faces for the year include YouTuber Emma Chamberlin, TikTok star Addison Rae, and Allyson Felix, an Olympic track athlete.

The 2021 co-chairs are actor Timothée Chalamet, singer Billie Elish, poet Amanda Gorman, and tennis player Naomi Osaka. These people are considerably younger than co-chair’s seen at previous events.

Dress codes vary from person to person, however, each outfit is a unique design that makes its own statement, and match the theme; this year’s theme is “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” which will reflect on modern American fashion.

Outfits for the Met Gala take an extremely long amount of time to be crafted, taking anywhere from weeks to months to perfect. A single ticket to this event can run a person up to $30,000, if they are wanting to go with a group and get a table, their looking to spend around $275,000.

This year will be something to look forward to with new changes, and after missing out last year many people are looking forward to seeing the most glamorous outfits on the red carpet. The Met Gala, hosted in New York City, returns Monday, Sept. 13, and can be watched live vogue.com/met-gala at 5:30 p.m.
