Culinary Students Hungry To Showcase Their Skills For Tartan Terrace Reopening

The Tartan Terrace Restaurant will be opening up its doors to the public once again. After missing the 2020 school year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the restaurant is set to reopen beginning Thursday, July 15 at 6:00 p.m. They will also be opening for lunchtime service on Tuesday, July 20, and Tuesday, July 27 at noon. 

The Tartan Terrace restaurant is a learning lab for students in the Culinary Arts as well as the Hospitality Management programs. Their lab is the restaurant experience, and the class will end after the dessert course. The restaurant will be buffet-style with a-la-carte options and will consist of a soup course, salad course, the main entrée course, and a dessert course. Drinks will be included as well. 

According to Adam Lang, the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Lab Coordinator, the lab is a collaborative effort. “Our service has four or more classes involved in production,” said Lang. Students in classes from butchering to cake decorating come together to bring guests the ultimate experience. “It is a chance for them (the students) to show off,” Lang said when asked about how the students were feeling regarding the reopening. 

The reopening gives students the chance to showcase their skills to the public, something they were unable to do last year. According to Lang, the restaurant was not open at all last year so the students and staff had to improvise. “We did mock services for the staff,” said Lang, “we invited some maintenance people.” This gave the students a chance to serve food to “people other than themselves in order to get some feedback.”

However, seats are not being reserved as quickly as previous years. “We are not filling up like normal,” said Lang. He speculates the main reason is because the restaurant relies on word of mouth marketing and people just may not realize they are open yet. The restaurant is seating up to 40 people for the July 15 event and reservations are required in order to partake. To make a reservation, please call 937-512-2014.

The meals will cost $12 per person. Credit or debit cards are the only acceptable form of payment and no tips are allowed. 

The Tartan Terrace Restaurant is located at the corner of 5th and Perry Street on Sinclair’s Dayton campus, building 13, on the fourth floor.
