Bringing Back The Dead: Why a ‘Last of Us’ Remake Could Spell Disaster

Recent leaks claiming that Sony and Naughty Dog are in the works of remaking The Last of Us (TLOU) which released in 2013, many Sony fans are upset, claiming the game is only a few years old, and doesn’t yet need a remake or remaster.

News broke from a rumor on comicbook.com, claiming that Sony was indeed working on a remake of the TLOU with Naughty Dog and it was revealed that Sony turned down a pitch sequel to another zombie game, Days Gone which garnered enough positive reviews, fans, and money to warrant a continuation.

For some reason, Sony did not want to continue the series and decided to shift the game’s studio developer to work with Naughty Dog on the TLOU remake. This led to tension within the corporation, with Sony supposedly failing to acknowledge their Visual Arts Service team who were initially working on the TLOU remake. A lack of acknowledgment and funding contributed to the group disbanding and leaving Sony entirely.

Critics have argued that all Sony had to do was make a remastered version of the game for the Playstation 5 as they did with Playstation 4, while others have speculated that this supposed remake has something to do with the upcoming TLOU show being made by HBO, which will be a reimagining of the first game. In regards to the upcoming series,  it makes sense that a remake of the game could happen, but it is still not a great idea.

Looking at the Future, if Sony doesn’t get their act together, they’re going to find themselves in stiff competition with Microsoft. Despite losing to Sony for a long time, Microsoft has recently been making big moves to possibly dethrone Sony and their PS5. For example, Microsoft just acquired all of Bethesda’s IPs including DOOM which, in tandem with their console exclusive HALO, bring in a bevy of gamers of the first-person shooter (FPS) genre.

There have also been rumors claiming that Microsoft is in talks with Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear Solid series. If this is true, Microsoft will be acquiring one of Sony’s most prized acquisitions or their ‘golden goose’ of the gaming industry.

It is truly unknown if this will be a reality since Kojima and Sony have always maintained a good relationship, yet it is possible since Sony has been losing their small Japanese studios due to Sony planning on shutting down the PS Store for the PS Vita and PS3, which many Japanese game studios rely on.
