The Sinclair Foundation has established a new scholarship to offer students. The Norma Hauer Memorial Scholarship was created by her family in honor of her memory and accomplishments. Sinclair nursing students who have an economic disadvantage will be eligible to receive this scholarship.
Norma Hauer always worked hard to reach her goals in life. While in her 70s, she enrolled in Sinclair’s nursing program and achieved straight A’s. Hauer earned certificates in medical office and transcription. She enjoyed attending classes and continued to do so into her 80s. She also spent time tutoring Sinclair students.
“While attending Sinclair Community College, mom found such joy in tutoring and mentoring students,” said her daughter Shary Hauer, “she will continue to inspire with this scholarship,”
Hauer always had a love of learning and was a consistent honor roll student. She graduated high school in Waverly, Ohio in 1945. After this, she moved to Dayton and attended Miami-Jacobs college and later became an executive secretary. Hauer continued to move on to big things, however, and eventually became the second saleswoman for the Jack Walkup Paper Company in the country. She also received her pilot’s license at the age of 46.
“From an early age, our mother recognized the value of education and, as a result, she became a lifelong learner and enthusiastically shared her love of learning with others,” said her daughter Patsy Hauer.
Norma Hauer married her husband of 64 years, Jerry, in 1956. Her husband took over his family business, Hauer Music, in 1957, which has been in the Dayton area for more than 80 years. The two raised their family of six children together in Dayton. They now have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Norma and Jerry Hauer gave their support to organizations such as the Gospel Mission, Salvation Army, and SISCA. Jerry Hauer was the President of the Rotary of Dayton for many years and his wife became the co-host for a number of events, such as a convention to Singapore. Norma Hauer enjoyed traveling and took many trips both domestically and internationally.
Norma Hauer died on Nov. 16, 2020. She was 89 years old.
