With so much out there to read, the idea of borrowing or buying all of those books can be daunting, never mind coming up with space to store hundreds of titles. Plus, if you’re looking for obscure or rare titles, finding them can be a task, even with Amazon to help. It’s all enough to make someone want to give up.
That’s where Project Gutenberg comes in.
Located at http://www.gutenberg.org , the project boasts access to more than 100,000 titles available for download for free, with 30,000 hosted on the project’s Web site itself. Project Gutenberg is part of a wider partnership of projects that include iBiblio (the Internet library), Distributed Proofreaders (volunteers converting public domain titles to digital format) and LibriVox (converting public domain titles to audio).
Project Gutenberg e-books are offered in a variety of electronic formats, including plain text and html and modern formats such as EPUB, MobiPocket, Plucker and QiOO. It also offers an extensive collection of both human and computer read audio books available in MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Speex and Apple iTunes formats.
The project is supported by tens of thousands of volunteers, according to its Web site, and accepts donations to help support the cost of bringing more public domain or donated titles into electronic format.
