In service 21 hours a day, everyday of the year – the Greater Dayton RTA provides students with transportation to and from Sinclair Community College without the hassle of trying to find a parking spot.
“The advantages of riding the bus are that you don’t have to deal with parking and you save money on gas,” said Automotive Technology major John Smith III. “Automobiles give you more freedom to get where you want to go, but if you want to be economical and are working on a budget, the buses aren’t that bad.”
For adults, RTA bus fair is $1.75 and for seniors the fair is only 85 cents. Transfers are an additional 25 cents. All Sinclair students with a Tartan Card can buy discounted bus passes at the Tartan Bookstore in Building 7 Room 110.
Sinclair student Roland Gordan says it is a “good thing” that Sinclair offers discounted monthly bus passes that are only $39 as opposed to the $55 that he would have to pay at the hub. Besides discounted bus passes, Gordan says there are other benefits of riding the RTA.
“Riding the bus gives me time to study. I can read my notes if I have a test to prepare for or something,” he said.
Nursing majors Lynn Scott and Chaenin Taylor have a different take on the RTA.
“I don’t see any benefits of riding the RTA at all,” said Scott. “I think studying on the bus is very difficult. You have people talking all around you and there’s automated messages that can disrupt your concentration.”
“There are no benefits of catching the RTA. The RTA is tacky; no one wants to catch the RTA to school. The buses be late, breaking down and stuff,” said Taylor.
Smith III said that he has experienced buses being late, but doesn’t stress about it.
“In my opinion, the RTA serves one purpose and that is to get people from point A to point B. That’s the most important thing and if you can understand that objective, you can deal with the frustration, fair increases and things of that nature that come with the RTA,” he said.
