Five things you need to know at Sinclair

With the current state of the economy in the dumps, community colleges are going through a bit of a boom period.

In August, Sinclair Community College Senior Vice President Robert Johnson announced “at least a 20 percent increase” in enrollment numbers from 2008’s record-breaking fall quarter.

The rise of enrollment at Sinclair means more competition on campus for students. Between battling for classes, lines at the bookstore and grabbing that last slice of pepperoni pizza, it tends to be a game of survival at Sinclair.

Here is a few helpful tips all of us need to know:

1.    Tartan card

Not only does your Tartan card give you a much-needed discount at most movie theatres, but it also discounts a variety of things on campus including parking, food and select merchandise at the Sinclair Bookstore.

2.    The Teleport

Located in a far corner of campus in Building 13, the Teleport computer lab offers a secluded, quiet feel while working on that important English paper. It’s a great alternative to the busy and noisy environment the Library provides.

3.    Building 8

What other building provides students with burritos, a swimming pool, two projection screens, a racquetball court and the Clarion?

The athletic office resides in Building 8, as well. If you’re feeling tight from a class and need to loosen up, pay the $3 fee and gain access to the racquetball courts, weight room and swimming pool for the entire quarter.

Call your local YMCA and see if they are willing to match that offer.

4.    Parking

With the noted increase in enrollment, parking is going to cause nightmares for commuting students. Begin your search for a spot at least an hour before your first class of the day to assure you’ll find some sort space for your vehicle.

5.    Security escorts

Parking garages at night can be scary to some, so Sinclair offers students an escort to walk with you to your car when the sun goes down. Give campus police a call at 512-2700 or stop by their office in Building 7, Room 112 and a uniformed officer will escort you to any destination on campus.
